BPPV Physiotherapy: What is BPPV, and how is it treated?

bppv physio

I first started working with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) patients when I was a young Physiotherapist in Perth, where I worked for some time in an outpatient ward near Fremantle, that sent home dispatch teams to individuals diagnosed with BPPV who had attended hospital but since been discharged and sent home.

BPPV is a common condition that affects the inner ear and causes brief episodes of dizziness or vertigo. It occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become displaced, leading to disturbances in balance and spatial orientation. This condition can be triggered by sudden head movements, rolling over in bed, or even looking up.

In general, BPPV is known to affect women more than men and usually affects women at middle age. This is because BPPV can develop due to increased hormonal fluctuations, especially during menopause.

As a BPPV physiotherapist at our Physio clinic, I’ve worked with the team to educate them not only on the diagnosis and awareness of this issue but also on the treatment of this crazy and, at times, sickening condition. If you experience sudden bouts of dizziness or vertigo, you must seek BPPV treatment promptly to improve your quality of life and restore your balance.

BPPV Physio: How We Diagnose and Treat BPPV

Physiotherapists play a key role in diagnosing and managing BPPV. Our team of specialised BPPV physios is skilled in identifying the specific ear canal where the calcium crystals have become displaced. Through a series of positional tests, we can determine the severity and location of the problem, allowing us to create a tailored treatment plan.

The cornerstone of our BPPV treatment is the Epley maneuver, a safe and noninvasive series of head movements designed to reposition the displaced crystals, reducing or eliminating dizziness. Our physiotherapists are experts in performing the Epley maneuver and other similar techniques, which provide immediate relief for most patients.

Furthermore, we also work with a series of ocular exercises, to challenge the brain and the vestibular system back into the normal range.

BPPV Rehab Exercises: Strengthening Your Balance

In addition to professional BPPV treatment, we offer guided BPPV rehab exercises that help patients maintain stability and prevent future episodes of vertigo. These exercises are specifically designed to retrain your balance system and improve the function of your inner ear.

Some common BPPV rehab exercises we recommend include:

  • Brandt-Daroff Exercises: Designed to desensitize the inner ear to sudden movements, reducing the frequency of dizziness over time.

  • Vestibular Habituation Exercises: Tailored movements to train the brain to ignore conflicting signals from the inner ear and maintain balance.

  • Gaze Stabilization Exercises: These exercises help your vision and balance work together more effectively, reducing dizziness when moving your head or body.

Our BPPV physios will guide you through these exercises, adjusting the intensity and frequency based on your progress.
